ANTIBACTERIAL CLOTHING: FUTURE OR HYPE?

ANTIBACTERIAL CLOTHING: FUTURE OR HYPE?

This past year’ coronavirus pandemic caused a huge number of changes in our wardrobe. Loungewear, for example, replaced workwear. We could have foreseen that companies would focus on designing masks and gloves. What we could not expect was the rise of antibacterial & antiviral clothing, which is a category recently implemented by retailers, embedded with elements that are said to fight bacteria that cling to clothing.

The Italian Albini Group, for example, presented VIROFORMULA™, a fabric which effectively protects against viruses and bacteria thanks to a technology named HeiQ Viroblock that actively actively inhibit viruses and kill bacteria upon contact on the surface in a few minutes.

The technology behind VIROFORMULA™ fabrics allows protection from bacteria and viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus which causes Covid-19. VIROFORMULA™ fabrics have been created for all types of clothing, making them ideal for the production of shirts, jackets and trousers, as well as for masks, gowns and any other garment.

This concept is innovative, and it is an evolution of what’s already happening in fashion, as brands already use similar technologies it to protect sport clothes against sweat-induced bacteria and mold. Wil this be the future or just an hype? We’ll discover soon, in the meanwhile we have to remember that if we don’t apply social distancing and proper hygienic practices, no protective gear and clothing can prevent us to get sick.
