3D technology is making great strides these days, as it is being used to create almost everything, but would you ever have imagined that one day we would see an entire school made with it?
That’s what Thinking Huts, a non-profit organization that uses innovative, humanitarian-driven tech solutions to close the global opportunity gap, and their partners – architectural design agency Studio Mortazavi, and Hyperion Robotics, that provides 3D printing solutions for the construction of reinforced concrete elements – are planning to do as soon as December 2021 when they will open the doors to the world’s first 3D printed school in Madagascar.
If all goes well, the project will comprise a single-story building with space inside for around 30 students, conceived as a “pod”; the idea is that additional pods can be added with relative ease if required.
The walls of the school will be built by extruding a locally sourced cement mixture, layer by layer, with a 3D printer; the parts of the school – like the roof, the doors and the windows – that cannot be 3D printed will be made from locally-sourced materials and added by human builders.
