Avalenn

Avalenn is a 100% plant-derived textile made from apple juice industry residues and plant fibers. Ideal for curtains or blinds, it reduces reliance on synthetic materials.

Avalenn

The message of the project

People in Europe spend up to 90% of their lives indoors, often surrounded by synthetic materials that can be harmful to both humans and the environment. Avalenn repurposes apple pomace, a by-product of the juice industry, transforming it into a biofilm and combining it with plant-based fibers and pigments. This innovative textile offers a more sustainable use of resources, while its natural properties help improve the indoor climate.

The idea behind the project

The industrial processing of apples into juice or cider results in large quantities of a material whose potential is often overlooked: pomace. These press residues are currently used mainly as fodder, compost, or for the extraction of pectin and biogas, which theoretically completes a circular process. However, the unique qualities of apple pomace could be utilized more effectively as bioplastic films. To enhance durability and strength, apple pomace films are woven into a biodegradable textile using plant-based fibers and pigments. This approach extends the natural cycle of apple pomace.

What next?

Avalenn's goal is not only to provide alternatives to toxic textiles but also to promote the benefits of plant-based, regionally sourced materials. By scaling up production processes, Avalenn aims to make this textile accessible to a broader audience, allowing more people to benefit from its sustainable and natural properties.
