FLORA CHAIR

This project aims at exploring disruptive solutions and resources available to design a modern sustainable chair.

FLORA CHAIR

The message of the project

The project's goal is to develop a modern, eco-designed stackable chair, showcasing research on the application of newly invented biobased fabrics as upholstery. Drawing on their expertise in lifecycle approaches, the team aims to experiment and demonstrate how an essential piece of furniture can be designed to minimize upstream environmental impacts.

The idea behind the project

According to the EU Product Environmental Footprint (PEF), 80% of a chair’s environmental impact is determined by the choice of raw materials, manufacturing processes, and transportation. With a focus on these elements, the team selected innovative sustainable materials and processes.

What next?

To test a selection of innovative materials on a prototype chair design, exploring their potential applications in furniture. The tangible outcome will be market-ready chair prototypes—both aesthetically appealing and technically sound, positioned at a premium price point.
To openly share the research process by documenting techniques and material findings through online publications. This effort will provide valuable feedback to material developers and, in parallel, promote sustainable best practices across the industry.
