The message of the project
The project aims to explore 'air' as a design material, using it to create large volumes and innovative shapes. Sofas, typically bulky and space-consuming, serve as an ideal example of how inflatable technology can provide creative solutions. Inspired by the craftsmanship of rubber boat manufacturers, who have demonstrated their ability to produce robust and durable products, the project seeks to highlight the beauty of these materials and the precision of their construction. This sofa showcases the untapped potential of air, offering a fresh perspective on furniture design and material innovation.
The idea behind the project
Inflatable furniture has long been considered but has not gained traction for indoor use due to issues such as PVC materials, air leaks, being too lightweight, and producing unusual noises. These challenges arise from design and material choices rather than the concept itself. The potential for inflatables remains significant, offering low material usage, compact packaging, and notable ecological and economic benefits.
Drawing inspiration from Marcel Breuer, who revolutionised furniture design in 1925 by adapting tube-bending techniques from the bicycle industry, the project aims to reimagine inflatable furniture by utilising materials and development methods from the boating industry. Boat builders have proven their ability to create highly robust and durable products.
The innovation lies not in new technology but in its contextual application. By applying the technology, techniques, and methods of boat manufacturing to furniture production, the project maximises the design potential of inflatable furniture through collaboration with inflatable boat builders.
What next?
With the new sofa, the project aims to set a new standard and build a successful young furniture brand. The vision is to create emotionally inspiring, long-lasting furniture by exploring unconventional approaches and pushing the limits of materials and production methods. The sofa is just the beginning, with plans to expand the product line in the future.
