The message of the project
The Loom project uniquely blends traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation to address critical issues within the furniture industry. By focusing on repairability and seat interchangeability, the project transforms chairs into versatile, long-lasting pieces that can adapt to changing needs and preferences. The chairs feature a minimalist, sturdy wooden structure that supports various seat upholsteries, which are attached directly without glue or nails. This enhances durability and facilitates ease of disassembly. This approach not only extends the lifespan of the furniture but also reduces environmental impact by promoting reuse, repair, and recycling.
The idea behind the project
The Loom project was conceived from a desire to create a chair that balances timeless durability with the flexibility to explore different materials and styles. The journey began with the design of a minimalist wooden structure, which underwent several prototype stages. Five identical structures were crafted at Norbert Brakonier's workshop. Acting as looms, designer Julie Conrad applied knotting and weaving techniques using various materials. This experimentation led to the creation of the first Loom chairs, each with a unique look and feel, which were showcased at a local design store event. The feedback from this presentation now serves as a foundation for further development, guiding the project's evolution.
What next?
The Loom project aspires to build a community of furniture owners empowered to repair and customise their pieces, ensuring their longevity and adaptability over time. This vision extends beyond chairs, with plans to expand the collection to include tables, shelves, and side tables.
