SKARABEOS: DEVELOPMENT OF A BACKPACK WITH BUILT-IN ALARM CONNECTED TO AN APP THAT INCREASES SECURITY IN OUR DAILY LIVES
For those who travel, there is a need of having their luggage controlled and at the same time the market demands bags with a high component of design. Skarabeos 2 aims at realising a next generation of product development with an intelligent portable assistant, an alarm-protected bag connected to an app service, which provides heightened security in your everyday life. It merges unique IoT functions with cutting edge design.
The project was focused on the development of several factors that through their interconnection lead to the obtention of a very valuable and innovative bag.
Research of sustainable textile materials and components
Comprehensive research on material selection with final use of 3-layer laminated fabrics. All 3 layers (exterior, membrane, lining) consist of 100% recycled polyester. This material is currently unique on the market. Moreover, it is waterproof, and it also features the required stability to use it for bags. With this material a maximum of sustainability and the desired functionality can be achieved.
The result is a business bag, which people can use to protect their devices and personal belongings in business and short trips.
It has incorporated a box, which contains the sensor and the magnetic leash, which is integrated in the flap covering the opening of the bag to be close together and in a stable position to avoid false alarms effected by unwanted movement.
Additional waterproof characteristic was developed, considering the seams.
Hardware/ technology was developed taking into account the reduction of electronic power consumption and employment of sustainable materials for the alarm system/ hardware.
Marketing/ Business strategy/ Financing under development in collaboration with Niels Garbe, a sales expert in the fashion industry, based in Berlin.

(Wolfgang Langedar) – design expert and creative leader. He has 15 years experience in Fashion Business and founded Utope, a company for Wearable design products and consulting in 2012. In 2013 he achieved international success and was awarded a Red Dot/Best of the Best for the realization of Sporty Supahero, one of the very first products to use stretchable electronics.
Spin off from Fraunhofer IZM and TU Berlin, resulting from the successful development of technologies for fabrication of products in the fields of textile and stretchable electronic systems. Stretchable Circuits provides engineering services and project management for flexible and stretchable electronic systems. Due to the almost unlimited possible applications, these new systems also provide previously unknown solutions in the fields of lighting technology, design, and the automotive technology.
