The message of the project
Corker chairs and lounge chairs target individuals who love contemporary design and are conscious of a sustainable future. This furniture family is entirely made from eco-friendly materials, yet its somewhat traditional appearance allows it to fit into a wide range of interiors. Thanks to the low number of parts, simple construction, and automated technology, the retail price can be kept within a low, acceptable range. Unlike ordinary upholstered furniture, these pieces do not require artificial foam or labour-intensive processes. This approach supports local manufacturing, reduces transportation, and benefits local workers in the cork industry. The technology required for production is relatively new and enhances sustainability further. Shape moulding technology for cork involves innovative processes that allow it to be moulded into various shapes while retaining its natural properties. This method efficiently uses cork granules, often utilizing by-products from other cork processing activities, thus contributing to waste reduction and maximizing resource use.
The idea behind the project
The Corker project promotes socially and environmentally responsible design by addressing the unsustainable nature of many traditional upholstery materials. The project aims to propose alternative material uses in the furniture industry, offering longer-term alternatives and new manufacturing perspectives. The production technology allows for experimentation with a wide range of forms and uses. In summary, the proposal focuses on high design quality and affordable prices, thanks to an optimized, versatile manufacturing process. This results in a unique and conscious alternative in the market.
