Giving waste a second life - Cocoon Puzzle

Wool and leather, two heritage-rich materials, are reimagined in this project by transforming waste into sustainable, modular designs that honor tradition while embracing innovation.

Giving waste a second life - Cocoon Puzzle

The message of the project

Wool and leather are regarded, in their respective countries, as two of the oldest organic materials with significant heritage value. They have been worked and perfected for thousands of years, reflecting artisanal skill and the deep connection between humans and nature. This project approaches these materials as waste and seeks to transform them into byproducts that honor their legacy.

The idea behind the project

The initiative emerged from observing a significant accumulation of material waste in artisanal workshops. Recognizing the cultural and heritage value of these raw materials, which could not simply be discarded, the team sought an alternative approach. Rather than wasting these resources, they designed a modular leather grid from these remnants, creating a structure that allows each piece to link together intuitively. The structure can be filled with clean wool that cannot be spun, thereby extending the life of these materials and promoting sustainable practices that respect artisanal traditions. By transforming this waste into a functional and coherent product, the project celebrates reuse while honoring heritage and introducing a contemporary approach.

What next?

The project aims to create a line of soft furniture units, including daybeds and futons, that stand out in the luxury interior design market for their exceptional material quality and ingenious design. These pieces promote sustainability and celebrate the values of craftsmanship, inviting reflection on the provenance of materials and the inclusive processes behind their creation. By merging Spanish leather, Scottish wool, and contemporary design, the project seeks to offer a new high-end product that reflects a commitment to a conscious and connected living environment.
