PHIOME

PHIOME is redefining skin and textile interaction with odour-preventative technology that utilises skin-native probiotics for the fashion and sportswear sectors.

PHIOME

The message of the project

The goal of the PHIOME project is to test, scale, and commercialise a Probiotic Textiles Treatment by encapsulating beneficial bacteria within fabrics for clothing. This initiative is a collaboration between textile company SKIN SERIES and microbiologist Dr Chris Callewaert.

The probiotic bacteria textile treatment is activated upon contact with moisture from the skin, allowing these beneficial bacteria to outnumber less desirable strains. The encapsulated bacteria are linked to reduced body odour, enhanced cell renewal, and improved skin immunity. This innovative approach not only eliminates the need for toxic chemical fabric finishes but also decreases the frequency with which clothes need to be washed. The project aims to utilise the natural properties of our bodies to enhance clothing performance.

The idea behind the project

Research has shown that chemicals, heavy metals, and antimicrobials used in fabric finishes can disrupt the bacterial balance on our skin. These substances not only adversely affect our health but also pose significant risks to the environment and natural ecosystems. The project seeks to address the sustainability issues associated with chemical use in the textile industry and their impact on both the environment and human health. The aim is to incorporate performance and functionality into clothing through a natural biotechnological approach, leveraging the properties of native skin bacteria to provide performance benefits.

What next?

The aim of this project is to license the probiotic technology to brands and textile manufacturers. This treatment could replace existing antimicrobial textile finishes, and due to the skin health benefits of the probiotic bacteria, it may also be utilised for its antioxidant properties. The market potential for this innovation is significant, capable of meeting current performance standards in sports and activewear, while also addressing the growing demand within the health and wellness sector.
